Drawing places and things and people works so much better to me than taking a photograph, because it brings back so much more memories, smells, sounds and senses and everything...
I think you would be surprised to know that all the detailed precise artwork that I do is actually a complete opposite of my sketching on the daily basis. Really have come a long way to start appreciating chaos and imperfection of quick drawing and just exercising the eye... Because from what I've noticed from my own experience or other people's - when you create something, whatever it is, - the greatest struggle is to forget the concept of good and bad, to forget perfection. When you learn that, the liberation begins, so you can do something important for yourself, and one day maybe even something fascinating for others.
